Anerley/Penge SE20

A blend of Victorian charm and modern living.

Anerley started its existence as part of Penge Common, formed as a new town within the ancient boundaries of Penge in 1827. The doomed Croydon Canal passed through Anerley; transecting Penge Common in 1809. Part of its route turned into a section of the London and Croydon Railway Company’s new railway line when the canal was closed in 1836.

Today, houses for sale in Anerley and Penge can range from large Victorian properties to more modern flats and housing estate properties constructed after the Second World War to ease property shortages. Penge in particular became a fashionable place to visit thanks to its proximity to Crystal Palace after the latter was relocated to Sydenham Hill in 1852-4 (and survived there until 1936). Poet Walter de la Mare and Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro both lived in Penge for a while, doubtless inspired by its green spaces and beautiful architecture.
